Q What do I need before I sign up for web design?

A

You will need the following:

  1. Domain and webhosting
  2. Text content for the pages
  3. Pictures for the pages(if you have any)

Q How do I present the text content?
A

Have the text content in one Word document per web page

  1. Links for navbar( include sub links if you have sub pages )
  2. Page title( link name ) at the top of the Word document
  3. Instructions(if you have any) at the top of the Word document. Don't mix instructions with page text content.

Q What webhosting do I need?
A

You'll need a webhost that supports PHP and MySQL.
Do not choose the cheapest kind of webhosting with "web editor only".

There are many webhosts out there. Here is one.

Q What is domain and what is webhosting?
A

Domain is an address on the Internet.

Webhosting is where you have your website files.

Many people think that ordering domain is enough. But for a website to work, you will also need webhosting. If you have a domain parked and later on need webhosting, the best thing to do is to order webhosting with the same company where you got the domain. This to avoid transferring the domain to another webhost, which can be a hassle sometimes.

Q How does the web design process work?
A

After you have your text + picture content ready for the site and have signed up for webhosting, you can sign up for web design.

During the web design process you will be able to see the development on your webhosting server.

Q Do I provide pictures/images for the site?
A

Yes, you shall provide pictures/images for the site content(if you have any).
For best result try to use high resolution images. You can use following image formats:
JPEG, PNG, GIF.

Name the images so it's easy to understand them. And keep the image names short.
Don't use spaces or weird characters. Use underscore instead of space.
Example: blue_car.jpg

Q What is software/script?
A

Software or script is kind of a small program that can make the website dynamic/interactive. Scripts are written in other languages than HTML. The most common script language is PHP.

Q What is a graphic layout ?
A

Graphic layout is used as a background for the website. Basically the website's look.

Q Can I update content myself?
A

Here are some options.

  1. If you have a web editor(i.e. Dreamweaver) and know HTML fairly well, you can update your content.
  2. The other way of updating content is by using custom programmed software/script. This let's you update content online via an admin system.
It's much more expensive to use software.
  3. If you can't afford software or don't have HTML skills, we can update and maintain the site for you.

Q How long does it take to design a website ?
A

A 3-5 page standard html site usually takes 3-5 days.
